  1. 1926 - British Conservative politician,
  2. member of Parliament for Surrey East. Under
  3. Heath he was solicitor-general 1970-72 and
  4. minister for trade 1972-74; as chancellor of
  5. the Exchequer 1979-83 under Margaret
  6. Thatcher, he put into practice the monetarist
  7. policy which reduced inflation at the cost of
  8. a rise in unemployment. In 1983 he became
  9. foreign secretary, and in 1989 he
  10. unexpectedly became deputy prime minister and
  11. leader of the House of Commons. On Nov 1 1990
  12. he resigned in protest of Thatcher's
  13. continued opposition to Britain's greater
  14. integration in Europe.
